Press Release 06-02-20
Circle of Peace, an organization committed to peace through education, forcefully condemns the excessive use of force by a white police officer in Minneapolis during the arrest of George Floyd, a 46-year-old African American man, who died during the incident.
We stand with those who demand the end to the deeply engrained racism through peaceful protests. Peaceful protests are a critical part of any civilized society, and is enshrined in our constitution. However, we also condemn those instances where gatherings devolved into lawlessness, which deflected attention from the real issue, and in some cases turned to looting, arson, and the destruction of property.
Circle of Peace calls for a united stand against police brutality and against all forms of racism and bigotry in law enforcement. We call for immediate and concrete steps to be taken to reverse the discrimination and systematic racism that remains prevalent in our society. Our leadership must ensure that swift and meaningful justice will be brought to the four individuals involved in Mr. Floyd’s murder.
Circle of Peace stands for upholding the rule of law – a critical ingredient of democracy – which is also the cornerstone of our society. This is an opportunity to decrease polarization by fostering better understanding and promoting human rights through education and positive advocacy.
